COLOUR RESEARCH

For the colour stage I began to look at reference. I mostly used movies which I liked and started looking at different scenes which had the lighting and colour I wanted for my animatic.

MOVIES

For my research I looked at two movies,"UP" from Pixar Animation Studios in 2009, and "Creed" from Warner Bros. Pictures in 2015. There were several shots where I studied the lighting and the colour used.

One of the scenes from Up was a stand out, I chose the scene form the beginning of the film when Carl, the main character, meets Ellie for the first time. I used this image to influence the colours for my animatic.

COMPLIMENTARY COLOUR SCHEME

This is a very special moment in the film where Carl meets his wife during infancy. The different shades of yellow and orange work well to highlight this special scene giving feelings happiness and warmth, establishing the connection between these characters.

The scene also uses blue to highlight the balloon. Its basically a complimentary colour scheme to give a warm feeling to the scene as well as highlighting the point of interest in the scene.

CREED

I also looked at the movie Creed. In particular the scene when Adonis enters the gym where he is going to train for the first time.

While the colours a more diluted and desaturated, they are still used for a similar emotional effect. The character is taking his first steps into his career, his story is about to begin. Yellow is used, particularly in form of old boxing posters on the wall, again to give feelings of excitement as the character is experiencing something new. While I used Creed to influence the colours, I mostly used the movie as a reference for the layout of the gym.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THESE SCENES?

Both movies use a complimentary colour scheme of yellow and blue to give the feeling of excitement and also highlight the point of interest. In Up its the balloon and Creed it's the main character. Both scenes show when the characters are at the beginning stages of their story. My story takes a place at a similar time, the character is entering the gym for the first time and feeling excited, anxious, to start training.
